Update: This single storm has already more than doubled the total national death toll from tornadoes last year. Ouch.

I know we have a few Auburn-area Oppos and a lot of school alums. I have some good friends in the area who lost someone close to them today (an 8-year-old, like my son). This area was home to me for about 6-7 years, hard to believe the death toll is already so bad given that it happened on a weekend afternoon. Very sudden.

It’s terrible that storm front moved very fast I was south of Atlanta at my dads about an hour and a half north of Auburn, in 10 minutes it went from just overcast to dark enough for the street lights to go on.

I cannot even wrap my head around the heartbreak of losing an 8-year old. My heart goes out to them.

This brings back memories of 2011, another reason I plan to never live in Alabama again. That's horrible.

Very sorry to hear about that. It’s always sad to lose someone due to severe weather, much less someone so young.

Thankfully it just stormed here in MS, but I also was not expecting it to get that bad in AL and GA today. The SPC only had a moderate outlook for today (at least when I checked it around lunch time), but it definitely ended up being much worse.

Yeah, up here in North Al it was just the usual spring deluge with flooding in the lowlands. I think the southern edge of this front caught a lot of people (including meteorologist) a little by surprise. The coolish weather doesn’t usually produce serious storms.

My condolences to your friends. Losing a child is unimaginable.

That sounds horrifying, I hope the best for the rescue efforts this morning.
